The boat was originally designed as Sparkman & Stephens design #2094-C2 for Yankee Yachts and produced as the Yankee 38, but that company only produced 30 examples between 1972 and 1975, before going out of business. Frank V. Butler purchased the molds and modified the design for production by his company, Catalina Yachts. The changes Butler incorporated included a new deck and cabin roof design, a taller rig and a balanced spade rudder, replacing the original skeg-mounted rudder.

The Catalina 38 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars, a raked stem, a raised counter reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin standard draft or shoal draft keel. It displaces 15,900 lb (7,212 kg) and carries 6,850 lb (3,107 kg) of ballast.

The boat has a draft of 6.80 ft (2.07 m) with the standard keel and 4.90 ft (1.49 m) with the optional shoal draft keel.

The boat is fitted with a Universal 30HP - 3 Cylinder diesel engine for docking and maneuvering. The fuel tank holds 25 U.S. gallons (95 L; 21 imp gal) and the fresh-water tank has a capacity of 55 U.S. gallons (210 L; 46 imp gal).

The design has sleeping accommodation for five or six people. There is a bow cabin with a "V"-berth, two settee berths in the main cabin, including a U-shaped dinette settee and an optional quarter berth aft on the starboard side. The galley is U-shaped and is on the port side, at the foot of the companionway steps. It includes a two-burner stove, an icebox and a double sink, with a pressurized water supply. There is an anchor locker in the forepeak. The halyards are hoisted by two winches on the cabin roof. There is a mainsheet traveler also mounted on the cabin roof. The genoa has sheet tracks on the bulwarks and primary winches in the cockpit.

The immediate impression upon stepping below is of lightness reflected from the varnished ash battens that line the hull, teak bulkheads and hand rails, and a teak and holly sole. Non­wood surfaces are white, accented by cloth covered cushions on two settees. Sunlight filters into the boat from two Lewmar hatches and 10 portlights, four of which open to provide ventilation. Overhead lights are scattered throughout. The companionway steps are rounded up at the ends, making it easier to use when the boat is heeled and are easily removed to provide access to the Yanmar Diesel engine.

The hull of the 320 is solid fiberglass, nine alternating layers of 1.5-ounce mat and 21.7-ounce roving. Vinylester resins are used on exterior skins above and below the waterline, so the hull is guaranteed for five years against blistering. Seven additional thicknesses of mat, roving and 2415 Pro mat are laid up in the bottom of the hull until a thickness of 1 in. is reached. Layers of 1208 Promat, and 2-mm Coremat reinforce the transom and sections where hull and deck are joined.

The mast, a tapered double-spread­er section constructed by Sparcraft, is stepped on deck. However, to avoid stress problems in the deck, loads are transferred directly to a compression post, which is a hardcast anodized tube attached belowdecks to 4-in. x 8-in. beams laminated to a fiberglass struc­tural grid system.

Wire standing rigging is attached to deck plates that connect stainless tie rods located in the main salon to an L-shaped aluminum bar laminated into the hull that acts as a chainplate.

The Hunter 356 features a tall, fractional rig, which is a direct descendent of the B&R rig that powered Hunter's Child to a second place finish in the recent BOC. Hunter has engineered the mast to carry less weight aloft with smaller sections. This is accomplished by utilizing swept-back spreaders and reverse diagonals as well as mast support struts. This combination provides superior strength without a backstay and increases the stability at the same time. By using a large roach main as the power sail, Hunter has eased the effort in sail handling and allowed for real versatility for all wind and sea conditions. The benefit is better performance with less effort. The deck layout of the Hunter 356 reflects the innovation that accompanies the rig. An integrated arch protects the cockpit from snapping main sheets and blistering sun with the optional Bimini. This arch keeps the cockpit clear and open. A custom console stands ready with the standard VHF and instruments. Single-lever control and a fold-down table along with engine instrumentation complete the command station. The swim platform and walkthrough transom complete with shower and folding ladder are perfect for water sports or for boarding the tender. Storage is everywhere and the non-skid is absolutely first-rate. Lady Laura is a 4 State Room 3 Head Galley Up Layout that can sleep 8. As you board you will find wide walkways on the exterior, you can enter from either side of the pilot house. Here you will find the full lower center helm and leather bench sitting area with storage below, and marble floors.  Just aft is the full-size galley with upgraded appliances, granite counter tops, and marble floors, as well as a custom pass through to the helm and dining area.  From the helm to starboard you can go forward down the curved stairway, leading to the 3 Guest rooms and 2 heads, each with a shower and tile floors. Each guest room has hanging closets and televisions.

Aft of the Galley to port is the full-size dining table with 6 chairs, and to starboard there is a full wet bar with storage above and below. The main salon offers two large couches and two sitting chairs as well as a flat screen tv, and designer fabrics and carpet. From the rear of the salon, you can access the aft deck from the custom widened sliding aft doors. At mid ship of the salon, the upper stairs will take you up a covered access to the flybridge, or you can head down a private staircase to the expansive master full beam stateroom with a walk around king bed, entertainment system, walk in closets, make up vanity with mirror, windows, and a ensuite full shower and bath with marble counters and floors. To starboard before you reach the master you will find the walk-in laundry and engine rooms.

The interior has an abundance of natural light from the large windows throughout, but there are blinds throughout when privacy is desired. The boat feels very open, spacious and clean.

The flybridge offers a custom hard top with a full strato glass enclosure, making this a sun deck useable for cruising or entertaining in any conditions, there is a full center helm with two helm seats. Aft of the helm to port there is a L shaped couch with table and to starboard there is another couch, there is storage below both couches. There is also a wet bar and fridge to port.  As you walk out the rear of the bridge, there is a spacious rear deck and a gas grill, further aft you will find the davit and tender.

The large bow area offers cushioned seating with storage below.
